Grand Canyon Deaths
The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. This incredible natural wonder is breathtakingly beautiful but can also be dangerous. Learning about Grand Canyon deaths can help you stay safe on your own adventure to this location. There have been an estimated 600 deaths at the Grand Canyon since the 1870s. Not all the victims fell, but some of them did. The majority of those who fell simply got too close to the edge and toppled over. Some of the fatalies were caused by environmental factors.
People have died when doing things like the video above shows when a sudden gust of wind caused them to lose their balance. Keep in mind too that some areas do not have any rails at all so always be aware of where you are.
Environmental factors include issues like heat stroke and hypothermia. Drowning also makes up part of the Grand Canyon fatality statistics. Forty-seven people were the victims of suicide, while 23 were homicide victims. Then there were the 128 people who died in a 1956 airplane crash. The morning of the crash, a TWA plane and a United Airlines plane collided into each other above the canyon. The crash occurred approximately an hour and a half after takeoff and happened in airspace that was unmonitored. Because of this very incident, stricter regulations regarding airspace monitoring were put into effect.

If you plan to visit the Grand Canyon, it is important to adhere to basic safety rules. This is especially important if you are traveling to the area with young children. There was an incident where a four year old girl plunged over the rim to her death. Always stay a safe distance away from the edge under all circumstances. There have been photographers who fell in an attempt to get that perfect picture. If you will be hiking down the canyon alone or with a group, be sure to stay hydrated and pace yourself. Don't be afraid to speak up if you are experiencing pain or discomfort when hiking. You should never attempt to hike the canyon by yourself as this can be very dangerous.
When you compare the statistics regarding Grand Canyon deaths with the statistics regarding tourism, you will see how small they really are. Approximately five million people visit the Grand Canyon each year. With only 600 deaths since the 1800s, this is a very safe destination to visit. As long as you take the proper safety precautions and use good common sense, you can safely visit this national landmark.
